Social connection practice

Relationships are as predictive of longevity as smoking status — treat them as a health intervention.

Social connection · Weekly · strong evidence

why it matters

The Harvard Study of Adult Development and Blue Zones research both highlight warm, reliable relationships as core longevity factors. Loneliness increases mortality risk comparable to major metabolic diseases.

the protocol

  1. 1. Inner circle map List 3–5 people you can call in a crisis. If the list is short, prioritize deepening one existing relationship this month.
  2. 2. Scheduled touchpoints One recurring call, walk, or meal weekly with someone you care about. Put it on the calendar like a workout.
  3. 3. Community anchor Join one group with shared purpose: faith community, sport, volunteer work, or hobby club.
  4. 4. Repair when needed Unresolved conflict is a stress load. One honest conversation beats years of avoidance.
